How did women function in those massive dresses in the 18th century?

How can anyone do anything wearing that?

Not all women wore dresses absolutely like Marie Antoinette--and that particular dress was more for show than anything since it was for that painting. Getting a likeness done of yourself was a big deal during that time period, so people wanted to show off.
